Lawyers Building Houses Instead of Cases
Habitat for Humanity Legal Build in Full Swing

Lawyers Lisa Clute and Sean Breen take a short break while participating in the Habitat for Humanity Legal Build in May.

In May 2003, the lawyers of Herman, Howry and Breen, LLP wielded power tools and tape measures rather than cell phones and Palm Pilots at the Austin Habitat for Humanity Legal Build at 2003 East 8th Street. The Legal Build program brings together legal professionals each Saturday for 12-week project to assist in completing the construction of a home that will be given to a local needy family.

Herman, Howry and Breen helped by installing windows for the three bedroom house that soon will be the home of a mother, her 14-year-old daughter and 9-year-old granddaughter. Approximately 15 area legal organizations are participating in the project including law firms, bar associations, UT law organizations and professional groups. "This is the second year of Austin Habitat for Humanity's Legal Build program. We are in our eighth week of construction and it is really going well, even ahead of schedule," comments Brent Jenkins, Habitat for Humanity Development Officer. The house is more than half-way complete."
