| Firm Expands Resources and Expertise with Addition of Houston Lawyer John Hempfling to Team
Born and raised in Austin, John Hempfling always knew he’d come home one day. So when the opportunity to join one of the best groups of trial attorneys around presented itself in December of 2003, he knew he couldn’t pass it up. “What attracted me to Herman Howry & Breen was not only their reputation, but the kind of people they are. They genuinely care about their clients and they know how to win. It was important to me that I be part of team that shows such tremendous dedication to results. And of course,” he chuckles, “you just can’t beat living in Austin.”
John attended The University of Texas at Austin, receiving his undergraduate degree in history in 1994, before heading to Houston to attend the South Texas College of Law where he graduated magna cum laude in 2000. After graduation, John joined the Houston office of Locke Liddel & Sapp, L.L.P., a firm with over 400 attorneys and practices in virtually every area of the law. While there, John focused his efforts on commercial litigation, including deceptive trade practices, construction law and contract disputes; maritime litigation, including personal injury, death on the high-seas and contract disputes; and appellate law, participating in cases before the intermediate courts of appeals and the Texas Supreme Court.
When it comes to representing his clients, John is passionate. “Being the advocate for the client is what drives me. It’s why I love what I do. If it’s a personal injury or wrongful death case, there is just so much at stake, and I like being the one to fight for my clients’ interests.” John also thrives on the complex nature of commercial disputes. “What makes business disputes so intriguing are the investigations – being able to uncover some aspect of the case that the opponent’s attorney missed. That’s when you know you’ve really done your job well, and it’s extremely satisfying.”
At Herman Howry & Breen L.L.P., John focuses on a variety of practice areas, including deceptive trade practice claims, construction litigation, contract disputes and personal injury claims. “I’m very excited to be joining a team of this caliber,” John says. “The experience gained in the courtroom will be invaluable, and it would be difficult to find a more supportive and knowledgeable group of attorneys. That’s what makes this firm such a great place to be.”
When not advocating his clients’ interests, you’re likely to find John enjoying some of his favorite outdoor activities, such as hunting in Lampasas, snow skiing at Big Sky, Montana, or even just riding his mountain bike through the Texas hill country. John also enjoys cooking and reading up on military history.
